Travel Purpose: leisure

Positive: Great location on a cliff overlooking the beach and close to two excellent seafood restaurants and two grocery stores. Many more restaurants and stores are a short drive away. The owners were very responsive when the hot water heater stopped working and a bathroom faucet broke. The master bed was comfortable and you could clearly hear the ocean. The house was stocked with bread, butter, jelly, fruit, oil, vinegar, salt/pepper, a chocolate bar, and a bottle of wine. They have a remote WiFi device that gave us great connectivity. The view from the bedroom patio was very impressive. The master bed was a comfortable full size bed. The two single beds are fine for children. It was mostly quiet.

Negative: Mold and mildew throughout the house! The smell was overpowering! Every piece of fabric, all the furniture, and every cabinet was moldy. We kept our clothes in our suitcases so they wouldn’t take on the odor of mold. We hung our blankets in the sun to make them tolerable. They have a coffee maker, but you can’t buy the capsules in any of the local stores. No kettle for making hot water. We had to boil water in a pot on an ancient stove using the one burner we could safely light. It was a gas stove and you have to use a lighter or matches to light it. The other burners might work, but the stove was so old you couldn’t read the burner labels. The stove sits high on a shelf so the gas burners are at face level. I don’t know if the oven works. Be careful. There was a glass cover on the stove that we broke. She charged me $100 for that repair. There are plenty of utensils, dishes, pots/pans, etc, but they are stored in cabinets that smell moldy. There is no heat or air conditioner. Colares gets hot in the day and cold at night. Only one person can take a quick hot shower. The water heater can’t keep up with the demand. The stairs to the master bedroom were very steep and narrow. Unless you are very agile you can’t safely use them, especially at night. The bathroom is downstairs. Parking on the street can be challenging. No parking space is reserved for the house. The lights inside the house were dim and the one in the den would darken and go bright on its own. The toilet had stains around the seat connectors and there was not enough light in the bathroom to shave. There is a light fixture over the mirror, but it doesn’t work.
