Santa Cruz is a historic and culturally significant neighbourhood in the heart of Coimbra, one of Portugal's oldest and most renowned cities.
The Santa Cruz Monastery is one of Coimbra's most important landmarks. Founded in 1131, it is a prime example of Romanesque and Manueline architecture. The monastery houses the tombs of the first two kings of Portugal, Afonso I (Afonso Henriques) and his son, Sancho I. This makes it a site of great national importance.
Adjacent to the monastery, the church of Santa Cruz is a stunning example of Portuguese Gothic architecture with intricate carvings and a beautiful interior that attracts many visitors.
